Church explodes on thieves: Divine intervention or just coincidence?
A church explodes on thieves and it's all caught on camera. When a couple of crooks thought to rob the Westway Baptist Church, they weren't expecting that they would nearly be blown to kingdom come. The robbers tried to remove the main electric cable, presumably for the copper within it, but they set off an explosion that sent them packing minus any stolen goods. However, the men just might have some serious injuries to show for their efforts.
According to an ABC News report dated Dec. 13, 2012, head deacon Michael Kirtley said, "Our security alarms went off at 2 a.m. on Wednesday and that’s when our church member Homer Pate notified the Harris County Sheriff’s department of the robbery." Kirtley explained that the incident was captured on a scary video. A man was cutting wires at the breaker box using a bolt cutter when the church exploded on the thieves. "The man just blew up into a fire ball,” Kirtley said. “I surely don’t know if he was electrocuted or even alive."
If the men were injured, they may seek medical care at a local hospital or medical facility. The church hopes staff at any facility that treats the wounded men will contact the authorities.
Some people are calling the explosion divine intervention, but it is likely only coincidence or simple physics. What happened at the Westway Baptist Church is probably exactly what you would expect to happen when you cut a live electrical wire with a bolt cutter. As Praise Clevelandso eloquently worded it, "Two thieves got a lesson in reaping and sowing when they tried to break into a Houston Church." It may not have been divine intervention, but it certainly was a case of just desserts.
Even though the men did not escape with any copper wire, they still cost the Westway Baptist Church a lot of money. Their actions caused the church to lose power. Although they rented a generator to power the church for Sunday services, they can only run the generator for a limited amount of time due to the expense. Fixing the damage done by the thieves when the church breaker box exploded will also add unnecessary expense. An insurance policy with a $5,000 deductible means that most, if not all, of the repairs must be paid for by the church itself.
