Brain-injured man reaches settlement with Taser

Updated at 04:47 PM today
A California man who suffered permanent brain damage after police shocked him with a Taser has reached a first-ever product liability settlement with the stun-gun company.
Santa Cruz County Superior Court Judge Jeff Almquist refused to seal court documents detailing the settlement Thursday over the objections of Taser International Inc.
The Scottsdale, Ariz.-based company agreed to pay 49-year-old Steven Butler $2.85 million but admitted no liability for the injury Butler suffered.
A Watsonville police officer used a Taser to subdue Butler in 2006 when he refused to get off a bus. Butler was drunk and off his psychiatric medication at the time.
Butler stopped breathing for 18 minutes before paramedics resuscitated him, causing a brain injury that now requires around-the-clock care.
